What is the difference between ER mentorship and a rotating internship?
ER Mentorship at Bay State Veterinary & Emergency Specialty Services
Rotations:
- 2 weeks of Orientation Includes emergency lectures and procedure labs
- 40 weeks of Emergency Medicine
- 8 weeks of non-Emergency rotations
- 2 weeks of vacation
Specifically:
- First 6 months:
- 19 weeks of Emergency Medicine (2 weeks is considered orientation) 2 weeks of Internal Medicine, 2 weeks of Surgery, 1 week of Cardiology, 1 week of Neurology, 1 week vacation
- Second 6 months:
- 23 weeks of Emergency Medicine (last 3 months may include some solo overnights), 2 weeks of additional elective weeks, 1 week of vacation
Total: 52 weeks
Didactics: During first 6 months: Weekly Intern rounds at OSVS 1 day every other week will be a dedicated didactic/self-study day with assigned readings or videos, procedure days, labs, and case
discussions. Some of these days will be used for alternative elective activities (radiology, exotics, other) Daily case-transfer rounds/discussions with ER or ECC doctor During second 6 months: Intern rounds at OSVS, schedule will accommodate this. Daily case-transfer rounds/discussions with ER or ECC doctor Resident lectures at OSVS.
Rotating Internship at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists
Rotations:
- 2 weeks of Orientation Includes emergency lectures and procedure labs
- 24-26 weeks of Emergency Medicine (combination of inpatient day shifts, and receiving overnight or swing shifts)
- 24-26 weeks of Non-emergency rotations
- 6-7 weeks of Internal Medicine
- 6-7 weeks of Surgery
- 12-13 weeks of Elective rotations: Cardiology, Neurology, Radiology, Exotics, Ophthalmology, Oncology, Clinical Pathology
- Optional extra weeks of surgery or medicine
- 2 weeks of vacation
Total: 54 weeks
Didactics:
- 90 minute sit-down morning case discussion
- Rounds with Internist and Criticalist when on ER days
- Weekly intern rounds
- Access to surgery and ECC resident rounds
- Resident lectures
